Wurlitzer Lyric Custombuilt

Thanks to Terence R for giving me the opportunity to review this instrument.

This clarinet is stamped ‘France’. It shows some traits that I associate with Thibouville/Couesnon and one that I associate with SML. The left pinkie C#/G# tone hole has no bevelling. The throat tone F# key is made with the spring that is reversed from normal, pointing upward. There is a hole in the key to accept the spring. And associated with SML, there is a very narrow center tenon.Serial #U2391B written vertically like a Penzel-Mueller. There is a batch number under the keys on both keyed joints: 5Y

Barrel: 61.4mm

Bore LH joint top: 14.7mm

Bore LH joint at bottom: 14.7mm

Intonation results taken when playing loud and not lipping. See how to interpret these results on the Model Comparison Page.

For this test, I pulled 0 at the barrel and 1.1mm at the center tenon.

Intonation summary: This is OK intermediate intonation. When this clarinet was built, it would have been quite acceptable. The low A can be undercut to improve it and the clarion E.

Key work quality: Standard quality for the day. A bit soft now.

This clarinet is most appropriate for: Any beginning to intermediate student, and especially one who will assemble and disassemble carefully.

Condition issues noted: No issues were found in the wood. The keys look great.
