Selmer Series 9 Star
My thanks to Alan “BLMonopole” for giving me the opportunity to review this beautiful clarinet!
Serial #R8166 with ** above the serial number on the LH joint.
Barrel: 64.7mm
Bore LH joint top: 15.3mm
Bore LH joint at bottom: 14.8mm poly-cylindrical!
Intonation results taken when playing loud and not lipping. See how to interpret these results on the Model Comparison Page.
For this test, I pulled 2.3mm at the barrel and 2.0 at the center tenon.
Intonation summary: This is probably a little better than my 1967 Series 9 without the star. The throat tone results were without lipping and without resonance fingerings. This has good intonation for a wide bore clarinet. It would not live up to today’s standards. I would think that the D/A (left ring finger raised) that is so sharp could be lowered in pitch by adding something (tape, chewing gum, glue, etc.) to close the hole a bit.
Key work quality: Very nice.
This clarinet is most appropriate for: Anyone.
Condition issues noted: None! The wood of this instrument is of the highest quality. Very tight and dense grain. This clarinet looks like new!
