Rampone Delux Cazzani

Thanks again to Deone B. for the opportunity to review this!

Serial #049, batch mark: dots followed by 19

Barrel: 60.9mm

Bore LH joint top: 14.65mm

Bore LH joint at bottom: 14.65mm

Deone sent me this interesting tidbit: Cazzani is a family that the Rampones married into (also from Quarta Sotto, IT) who were clock makers and repaired brass instruments. I suspect that this led to Rampone Cazzani becoming more involved with Adolf Sax and perfecting and focusing on the sax.

Intonation results taken when playing loud and not lipping. See how to interpret these results on the Model Comparison Page.

For this test, I pulled 0 at the barrel and 0mm at the center tenon.

Intonation summary: Amazingly good. This trades sharp first chalumeau notes (the normal) for flat E in the clarion register. The tone hole for that E is not undercut. None of the right hand tone holes seem to be undercut. I will do a little to improve the clarion E. The flat A and Bb in the throat tones are because of how loud I was playing. The flatness for the last three high register notes is more of a problem. Anyway, this is what I call good intermediate intonation.

Intonation results above reflect the changes after I undercut the A/E tone hole and the A G# throat tones.

Key work quality: It’s OK for this time period. I noticed that the register key was bent and when I bent it back it moved too easily.

Pads: LH joint all 10mm except one 8.75. (Greenback medium) RH joint has two different than the other Rampone: 17.5mm x 3, 15.5 x 1, 11.5 and 10.

This clarinet is most appropriate for: Beginning to intermediate players. This clarinet has a lovely tone— perhaps because of the 14.65mm bore.

Condition issues noted: I filled a slight chip in the middle tenon.
