Many thanks to Gary Kern for giving me the opportunity to review this clarinet.
This is not the same clarinet as the plain Strasser which I already reviewed. That instrument was probably made in the 1940s, and the King contract probably came around 1956-62. The difference in the key work is very plain. The newer key work is softer and, to compensate for that, they used a thicker style of key work. Still, this has very nice intonation.
Serial #13620
Barrel: 63.65 mm
Bore LH joint top: 14.87mm
Bore LH joint at bottom: 14.87mm
Intonation results taken when playing loud and not lipping. See how to interpret these results on the Model Comparison Page.
For this test, I pulled 1.5mm at the barrel and 1.8mm at the center tenon.
Intonation summary: Very good intermediate intonation by today’s standards.
Key work quality: The key work is thicker and clunkier, and not as nicely finished. So I suspect this was a student level instrument.
This clarinet is most appropriate for: This is still a nice student instrument.
Condition issues noted: The lowest tenon was chipped ⅔ away. I spliced on material from a hard rubber Chinese clarinet.
