Woodwind / The Woodwind Co. NY

Thanks to Charles Nichols for giving me the opportunity to review this excellent vintage clarinet!

Serial #10721

Barrel: 63.4mm

Bore LH joint top: 14.8mm

Bore LH joint at bottom: 14.8mm

This has the wide and super-comfortable rings that I like so much and which I have related to Thibouville and the Martin Frères tradition.

Intonation results taken when playing loud and not lipping. See how to interpret these results on the Model Comparison Page.

For this test, I pulled .3mm at the barrel and 1.5mm at the center tenon.

Intonation summary: Very good intonation. This would have been professional intonation in its day, which I estimate to be in the 1930s. Today it is still very good intermediate intonation.

Key work quality: I found some bent keys, but when I bent them back, I found them to be sturdy. The bent places seemed due to dropping, not weakness in normal places like at the bridge or the crowsfoot key.

This clarinet is most appropriate for: Intermediate to advanced players.

Condition issues noted: Treat the keys with respect. The wood on this instrument is terrific.
