V Kohlert's Sons Graslitz

Thanks to Gary Kern for letting me review this clarinet!

Serial #267583

Barrel: 62.1mm

Bore LH joint top: 15.8mm HUGE

Bore LH joint at bottom: 15.1mm poly-cylindrical and WIDE.

Intonation results taken when playing loud and not lipping. See how to interpret these results on the Model Comparison Page.

For this test, I pulled 2.5mm at the barrel and 1.5mm at the center tenon. I happen to not have my regular Chedeville Prime mouthpiece for this test. (Long story) So this test was using a Cheap Chinese poly-carbon mouthpiece. Basically I think that the intonation results will only be off a cent or two here or there compared to my normal mouthpiece. Response and tone were different.

Intonation summary: This is intermediate intonation. A really good player who knows this clarinet well could play it in tune. This might be best played by a jazz player. The low register is better in tune than many intermediate clarinets, but the corresponding middle is too sharp. A player using more of a jazz set up could bring those sharp notes down easier. I had to pull out quite far, and using a different barrel and experimenting with pulling more in the center might help.

Key work quality: Sturdy chrome plated keys, but quite sloppy in the fit and finish department. There is too much play in some places which cannot be adjusted out by tightening a screw.

This clarinet is most appropriate for: Jazz players. For students in a school band, this would be OK for a beginner, but in a good high school band or small ensemble it could easily become obvious that this clarinet doesn’t agree in intonation with others. In the lower register, it might be more in tune that its neighbors, in the middle/clarion register, this one would be out of tune.
