Pruefer student model

Many thanks to David Watson (DaveLeblanc at clarinetpages.info) for giving me the opportunity to review this clarinet! I'm so sorry this didn't turn out to have normal Pruefer good intonation!

Barrel: 68.3 mm hard rubber barrel

This clarinet has a special double key for the LH second finger which allows in tune and clear 1 + 1 fingerings for Eb/Bb.

It has plastic inserts for most of the tone holes. This probably was done for quicker manufacturing of a student model. This is especially visible on the third finger hole on the LH joint, where this tone hole is nicely rounded and especially comfortable.

The register key is off center, and the tube doesn’t go in straight, but is at an angle going downward of about 30%.

For this test, I pulled 2.8mm at the barrel and 1.4mm at the center tenon!!! The top of the LH joint is banded, and it may have been shortened in that process.

Intonation summary: This is awful. It appears to be a student clarinet, because of the plastic inserted tone holes. Something went wrong in the design of this one.

Key work quality: Rather typical for good key work of this period. The keys shine up beautifully.

This clarinet is most appropriate for: A beginner.

Condition issues noted: I filled the crack more that was previously banded in the left hand joint.
