We’ve taken a bit of a dip again this week with lots of sneezing and sniffles about! Let’s try to get back on track next week and aim to beat our 96% target. We can do this if we all work together.

Attendance this week: 95.35%

A Summary Of The Week

posted 27 Sept , 4:08 by J Croxon

This week has been ANTI-BULLYING WEEK at Lea Forest and there’s been a lot of activities taking place around this theme. Thank you to Miss Hadfield who has led this throughout the school and raised awareness. This years phrase was CHANGE STARTS WITH US. We started the week with an assembly led by Mr Taylor. He set the children a challenge of giving someone a compliment. I missed the assembly and then wondered for the rest of the day why I was receiving so many compliments from the children - more than usual anyway! We have also worked as a school to create a clear definition of bullying so that everyone is clear (including parents).

I’d like to say thank you to all of the Reception parents that attended our family picnic on Wednesday afternoon. It was lovely to see so many of you. The Reception team enjoyed having some time to get to know the families of our wonderful children at the beginning of their learning journeys. We had lots of positive feedback and can’t wait for our next events being held for Early Years. We hope that you can all join us on Wednesday 9th October for our bedtime story session - get your PJ’s ready! We also have a ‘crafternoon’ planned on Thursday 17th October. Parental engagement is so important and we really value your contributions.

Finally, thank you to Mrs Morsely for organising such a wonderful European Day of Languages on Wednesday. The whole school celebrated many different languages and had a taster lesson, including British Sign Language, French and Spanish. We were also joined by pupils from Tudor Grange Academy, Kingshurst.

Year 5 and Year 6 Walking Home

posted 23 Sept , 5:25 by J Croxon

A large number of our Year 5 and Year 6 children have permission to walk home alone. It has been reported that a lot of these children are not heading straight home and are hanging around the streets or at the local shops. If your child is a Year 5 or Year 6 walker, please ensure you speak to them about the importance of going straight home at the end of the school day.

Votes4Schools

This week, Lea Forest have launched an exciting new programme called 'Vote For Schools'. Miss Allcroft led this week’s assembly with our first question 'Is gaming good for you?’

This sparked wonderful discussions between the pupils which culminated in pupils voting 'yes' or 'no'.

We look forward to finding out the results next week. Our work links to our children’s rights, Article 13:

Every child must be free to say what they think and to seek and receive all kinds of information, as long as it is within the law.

A Summary Of The Week

posted 23 Sept , 5:25 by J Croxon

What another fantastic week it has been! We started the week by opening the doors for our chill and chat event, which allowed parents and carers to come along and share their views. Vicky Shread, our PCAB Chair started the meeting and then Mrs Gonzales and I joined. I asked everyone to be honest and to share ‘what we do well’ and ‘what we could do to make things better’. Thankfully, there was a long list of things we are doing well, with just a few suggestions and ideas on what to do next. These ‘chill and chat’ events are crucial for our continued success. Thank you to everyone that came along. We will have another ‘chill and chat’ event soon - look out for the next date.

I have spent some mornings carrying out learning walks and this week I was looking at the standard of teaching and learning in maths with Miss Ward who leads maths. I am amazed by the learning environments and how hard my staff and children work. The children’s books are looking great already with so many learning opportunities and progress shown.

We will be holding our annual ANTI-BULLYING WEEK next week, so please ask your children what they’ve been learning about. I’d also like to explore your opinions and create a definition for what ’bullying’ is. This word is often used, but not everyone has the same understanding.

Parking Reminder

posted 13 Sept , 5:25 by J Croxon

West Midlands Police and Parking Patrols from Birmingham City Council will be patrolling around the school next week. We are very grateful to the vast majority of our parents that park legally and safely away from the gates and zig zag markings but we are also concerned that our staff have reported 20 vehicles to the police this week for dangerous parking. Please think carefully about where you choose to park and don’t place our children’s lives at risk to save a few seconds.

Building Work Update

posted 13 Sept , 5:25 by J Croxon

Thank you for bearing with us whilst we all get used to the different entrances and exits that we will be using whilst the work is carried out.

We hope that the progress of our building work to create a new modern entrance and additional classrooms will be more visible next week when work commences to remove the existing trees around the Link Corridor and caretakers house. Don’t worry we will be replacing them with over 100 saplings around our grounds in the next 12 months.

Watch this space as the building is transformed over the coming months.

Another Remarkable week

It’s been great getting back into the swing of things since the summer break! All of our children have settled back well, including our Nursery and Reception classes - with lots of happy faces around school and fantastic work already being produced. I am also over the moon with the children’s smart appearance - children are wearing the correct uniform with black footwear. Mr Taylor is determined this year when it comes to uniform so they’ll be no slipping through the net. We will be focusing on PE kits next week. There’s a reminder about PE expectations on page 2, but the biggest change is that we are expecting children to wear their team colour T-shirt (red, yellow, green or blue).

I’ve taken the time to visit all classes this week in their learning environments and I’m delighted to report that ALL of our classrooms look REMARKABLE. A big thank you to the staff team for creating such enriched, engaging environments for the children to flourish. We’ve also been joined by Freddy Fit this week who has been training some of our Year 5 pupils to become play leaders to increase physical activity outside during break times and lunchtimes.

Attendance

Attendance will remain a major focus for everyone this year. It is vital that children are in school everyday! Please help support us in raising attendance. We are determined to reach (or even beat) our 96% target for 2019/20. We haven’t had the best start, but this has started to pick-up. We are keeping a close eye on individual classes and pupils. This week, the attendance is Key Stage 1 (Y1 and Y2) is simply not good enough Let’s work together and make this better.

Meet my team

Each week I’ll be sharing photographs of ‘who is who’. This week I’d like to introduce you to my Senior Leadership Team (SLT) from left to right: Mr Taylor (Deputy), Mrs Gonzales (AHT), Ms Wale (AHT, Mrs Law (SENDCO) and Mrs McCarthy (Integrated Support Manager).

Mr Clarke's Message

posted 6 Sept , 5:19 by J Croxon

Welcome back!

I hope you all had a happy and healthy summer - it already feels like a distant memory now. It’s been superb seeing everyone return to school this week. It is always so refreshing to see so many happy faces returning to school after 6 weeks away. We are yet to see our new recruits in Nursery and Reception who will be joining the Lea Forest team throughout next week. Not everyone at school gets a holiday and over the summer period there has been lots of work carried out in order to make further improvements to the school site, providing the children with better experiences. A huge thanks to Mr Croxon, Mr Jules and Mrs McCarthy for ensuring all these jobs were done during the summer. Staff have also been busy in school throughout the summer preparing classrooms for our children.

The biggest change since returning has been the closure of the link corridor and the Key Stage 2 gates. This is because of the building work which is about to commence. We are about to start a 16 week programme of work which includes building a new entrance, adding extra rooms and demolishing the old caretaker’s house. I understand that it’s a bit of a squeeze at the end of the day, but we are finding the best ways to exit the school at the end of the day. Obviously, safeguarding is our priority and we want to make sure that every child is returned to their parents safely at the end of the day. I appreciate your patience during this time of upheaval.

Our children have returned to school looking very smart in their uniforms and ready to learn. Please remember appropriate black shoes (or all black trainers) are required. For PE lessons, children must wear the full Lea Forest PE kit (see website for details). Mr Taylor and I have been checking uniforms this week; PE kits are on the agenda for next week.

Attendance will remain a major focus for everyone this year. It is vital that children attend school everyday! Please help support us in raising attendance and reaching our target of 96%. There will be more information about attendance following in next week’s newsletter.

Finally, I am really proud of our most recent achievements and how Lea Forest has grown over the last 4 years. This is all down to the fantastic children, staff and engagement from parents and wider community. I have been delighted to receive so many positive comments from parents before and after school throughout the summer.

This year is set to be a REMARKABLE one and I look forward to the journey that lies ahead for us all.
