BELL RINGER:
1- Open the Graphic Organizer in Google Classroom.
2- Read through the 6+1 Traits- have each person on your team take two traits and read them and explain it to the rest of the team.
6 + 1 Traits: Use the links to read more about each trait if you need to:
Ideas—the main message- What is your opinion on your topic? What ideas do you want to convey to your readers.
Organization—the internal structure of the piece- For this opinion piece you need to use a multi-paragraph structure and write at least 750-1000 words. You should have a CLAIM, use EVIDENCE, and JUSTIFY your opinion and ideas.
Voice—the personal tone and flavor of the author's message- For this opinion piece you need to use a natural voice and make sure you explain your thoughts. You will still need to use formal writing-- no using I, you, or contractions in your writing.
Word Choice—the vocabulary a writer chooses to convey meaning- Make sure you use words that are appropriate to your topic and that work for a student audience. If you don’t know the meaning of the word-- define it or don’t use it.
Sentence Fluency—the rhythm and flow of the language- Make sure your sentences are concise and don’t run on.
Conventions—the mechanical correctness- GRAMMAR ALWAYS COUNTS. Even when you are writing for a website.
Presentation—how the writing actually looks on the page- For a webpage, you should have pictures placed within the writing piece, and use more paragraphs than normal. Huge blocks of text does not read well on a webpage. So shorter paragraphs and many images make your writing look legitimate.
CLASS ACTIVITY:
Today you will need to work on your Graphic Organizers for your Opinion Essays on your Individual Pages.
Your individual page must include the following:
1- An image describing or relating to your subtopic;
2- Research about your subtopic; and
3- A multi-paragraph Opinion Piece about your subtopic. This is your Opinion piece based on your Brainstorm Outline.
4- Copies of your MLA citations from your Brainstorm sheet- called a Works Cited.
See your Rubric for specifc grading information.
1- Your individual Opinion Writing needs to read like a researched blog post and is cohesive and understandable.
2- Complete sentences are used and all paragraphs have the required amount of sentences.
3- No text speak, slang or casual language used. It should read as if you are "speaking" to your audience, but still be formal enough to be readable, relatable, and deemed credible.
CONVENTIONS- Use the 6 traits + 1
1- Writing is clear of grammar and punctuation mistakes;
2- All proper nouns are capitalized;
3- All typos and simple errors are corrected;
4- No "text speak" is used.
5- "Spoken" language is used by sparingly and just to create relatability to your blog audience.
