CLASS ACTIVITY:
1- We are reading today as we wait to get called for your reading goal check and Journal Check #2.
2- Make sure your Journal is ready before I call you to my desk.
3- Make sure you have all the parts what is required for the Journal Check #2.
4- When I call you to conference- bring your JOURNAL, YOUR IRB, and YOUR POST-IT all filled out. If you don't have these items- I'll send you back to your desk and if I run out of time to talk to you-- your grade is a zero. Be prepared.
DUE THIS WEEK:
1) Wednesday 10/18- Newsela AOW Japanese-American Relocation in the U.S. During World War II- read and take the quiz.
*** IF you did not read the article at the 1180 Lexile-- you will not receive a grade for this assignment.
2) Friday 10/20- Journal Check #2- be sure you check what is required for Journal Check #2

TODAY IS Thursday, October 19
READ AND DO THIS NOW:1- You must have Chromebooks or your drafts in your journals today.
2- If you need your Journal because it has your draft in it-- get it. If your draft is on your Chromebook- YOU DO NOT NEED YOUR JOURNAL.
3- You have to have a Pen or a Pencil today.
4- Sit in any row you like.
5- Put ALL your things in the basket under your desk.
NOT ON THE FLOOR.
BELL RINGER:
1- Open your draft and leave it on your desk. I will be checking you off for having a draft in class.
2- Get 2 index cards from the back counter.
3- Write your name on the BLANK sides of each card. First and Last, please.
CLASS ACTIVITY:
1- We are SPEED DATING today with your drafts.
2- One person will READ and one person will write an EVAL on one of their index cards.
3- THE READER will read their draft for up to 3 minutes. You will read OUT LOUD to your partner. Keep in mind that there are others in the room so keep your voice appropriate for reading to someone directly across from you.
4- During the reading, the EVAL person should use one of their index cards and complete the following about the READER'S piece. Write while you are listening to them read.
At the top of index card:
Write the READER'S NAME
Write the type of piece they have written: Story or Poem
Under their name EVALUATE their piece in this way:
K- write what you KNOW from hearing the piece
W- what do you WONDER or question
L- what did you LEARN from their writing.
You can write in short phrases or sentences. One for each KWL should be fine. You can discuss this with them if you need to tell them more information.
5- After the reading, the EVAL person has 2 minutes to discuss what they wrote on their card with their READER.
6- The EVAL person needs to give the card to their READER when they are done talking. Talk until the timer goes off.
6- After the 5 minutes, we'll move one seat over- A's go Right and B's go Left.
7- We should be able to do this 4x. By the end, you should have 2 eval cards for your piece (READ 2x and EVAL 2x).
8- You should take the suggestions from your EVAL person and incorporate them into your writing piece.
9- I will collect cards from you when the writing is due on Monday 10/23. If you do not turn in the 2 cards you received YOU will not get points.
10- You will have the time on Monday to finish writing and get it ready for the contest.

1- Complete the Newsela assigned to you in your Binder- Japanese-American Relocation in the U.S. During World War II.
2- Read at Lexile 1180 and complete the QUIZ only. Your grade will be based on your quiz score so make sure you take your time and answer the questions carefully.
CLASS ACTIVITY:
1- When you are done with your Newsela reading and the quiz, you can work on your draft which is due tomorrow in class of your short story or poem.
2- Make sure you have your rough draft in your journal to start. ESPECIALLY if you do not have a Chromebook.
3- If you do not have a Chromebook then your draft should be done IN YOUR JOURNAL.
4- IF you do have a Chromebook, then you need to have a Google Doc Draft in class tomorrow.
Points will be given for following directions.
REMINDERS:
1- Your Short Story must be MAX 750 words and double-spaced. 2- Your Poem must fit on one page and can be any form-- free verse is probably best for this contest.
3- You will be entering this in a contest so keep in mind you will get a final grade AND be entered into a contest. There are cash prizes for winning.
4- See Mrs. Burbridge's sample poem for an example of how to format your poem and your short story.
5- DRAFT FIRST IN YOUR JOURNAL. Then move to a Google Doc to start your draft for sharing on Thursday.
6- IF you get done with your draft then make sure you check what is required for Journal Check #2 on Friday and/or read your IRB.

BELL RINGER:1- Find the page with your Holocaust Victim ID Card and their Map in your journal.
2- Go to Google Classroom and read the instructions posted for IN-CLASS ASSIGNMENT- What happened to our Holocaust Victims? Creative Writing Piece.
3- READ THE INSTRUCTIONS. CAREFULLY.
CLASS ACTIVITY:
In the Google Classroom assignment, there is an attached link to a document that will tell you what happened to the child in your ID card taped in your journal. (If you still do not have one, come and see me for one ).
1- Find your person and write what happened to them in your journal. You can start a new page dated 10/17/17 and title it "What happened to:" and their name.
2- After you write what actually happened-- then add what you think/feel or how you reacted to what happened to them.
3- Then decide how you are going to honor their story-- are you going to write a short story or a poem about your person?
4- Use your journal to start a rough draft short story of a long-form poem about your victim.
5- Your Short Story must be MAXIMUM 750 words and double-spaced. You must have a title and have your name centered at the top.
6- Your Poem must fit on one page and can be any form-- free verse is probably best for this contest.

TITLE: Anne Frank The Whole Story- REFLECTION.
2- Write a paragraph about what you thought about the movie-- what do you now think of Anne Frank, her father, her family, the Van Pels, or Mr. Pfeffer? Write and explain all that in your journal.
CLASS ACTIVITY:
1- After your reflection writing, you will have 3 minutes to clean up your paragraph, add to it and write details you forgot.
2- Then you will share what you wrote with your group. READ IT ALOUD. Just as it is written.
3- Then talk about what you thought about the movie. You have 10 minutes to get through your share and discussion.
4- When we are done, we'll have a large group discussion.
5- After our discussion, you will complete the Exit Slip on your clipboard and turn it into the White Turn in Box.
