1- Read the Junior Scholastic article on the clipboard.
2- Please don't mark the article.
3- Leave them on the clipboard when you move to the next station, even if you don't finish reading. There are other copies at the other stations.
STATION TWO: (Center two tables)
WRITING- Responding to the 10 Commandments of Non-Violence
1- Read the 10 Commandments of Non-Violence poster.
2- Take the copy of the Arrest Report of Walter Maddox and read through it. Pay attention to his fine and his sentence.
3- On the back write a paragraph about the following:
A- Walter was around your age when he was arrested on May 29, 1963. What do you think about Walter and his commitment to the commandments?
B- In our reflection explain how you would have followed the commandments. Explain which ones you would have been the hardest to stick to-- especially if you had to face what Walter had to while he marched-- biting dogs, the water pressure of the hoses, and being arrested just for marching for expressing his freedom of speech and want for equal rights.
STATION THREE: (Back two tables closest to the door)
COMPREHENSION- Take the quiz on the Jim Crow Laws and respond to the "Fight for Freedom" article
1- Read about the Jim Crow Laws around the South and take the "quiz."
2- On the back of the sheet, there are three questions about the Junior Scholastic article. If you need to look at it again, there are extra copies of the article on your clipboard.
3- Answer ONE of the following questions in a complete paragraph- 5-8 sentences.
1- Many civil rights leaders were reluctant to include children in the Birmingham demonstrations. Even Martin Luther King Jr. was hesitant at first. What might be some of the advantages and disadvantages of having kids march? Explain your reasoning and use information from the text to support your idea
2- How does Birmingham today compare with Birmingham in 1963? Explain your answers using information from the reading and from your life here in Birmingham.
3- Police officers arrested more than 2,000 kids during the Children’s Crusade, and city jails were filled to capacity. Some of the arrested students were taken to the Birmingham fairgrounds, where children were locked in animal pens. The kids were kept in filthy conditions and given little food. What do you think this said about what the Police and Bull Connor thought of the children protesters? What evidence do you have to support your ideas?
When you are done with all three stations- STAPLE your Jim Crow Quiz and your Walter Maddox response together and turn them in. Put the Jim Crow Quiz on the top with your name visible before you staple.
