Choose a Newsela from the Text Set Lend A Helping Hand.Pick one article to read.
Read it between the 1000-1100 Lexile (or something close to this).

BELL RINGER:
1- We'll watch a video about Chelsie Hightower - Professional Dancer - LINK
2- In your journal, find a clean page, date it 10/26/17 and Title It: My GOAL.
3- After we watch the video and then write a paragraph about our future goals. Yesterday you wrote about your dreams. Write about activities, behaviors, and attitudes that will positively affect your goals and plans for your future. In what way can these things promote success?
CLASS ACTIVITY:
1- Once we are done with the class activity- get your Brainstorm sheets and meet with your group to finish.
2- Once your group is finished you'll post them on the wall where we have your class marker.
3- Take an index card from the black cabinet and write your new team members down (I will place you in groups).
4- Then look at the brainstorm sheets and decide on a topic you want to work together to research. Your driving question is: How can we work to change the world?
5- Your topic will have to be something you can
A- RESEARCH,
B- Write opinion pieces on based on your research, and
C- Bring you to a solution that can CHANGE something in our world, school, state,
and community.
6- Once you have your topic and you have decided on what you are going to do-- turn your card into Mrs. Burbridge so she can approve your idea.
7- IF you get your card done, open the Initial Research Document on Google Classroom and start working on answering the questions together as a group.
8- Look at Mrs. Burbridge's sample for an idea of how to tackle your research. If you do not finish- we'll work on this next week on our research days.

CLASS ACTIVITY:
1- STATION ONE- Reading about communities in need.
Choose a Newsela from the Text Set Lend A Helping Hand.
Pick one article to read.
Read it between the 1000-1100 Lexile (or something close to this).
Take the quiz.
On the clipboard- there is a class roster- next to your name-- WRITE the article title AND your quiz score.
2- STATION TWO- Analyzing who are the "Agents of Change" in our communities.
With your group- take an ABC sheet and together fill out each of the boxes.
You need to list in EACH BOX an "agent of change" in our community.
You can list a person's name, a position in our society, or even a group of people in each box according to the letter of the alphabet.
Complete the whole list together as a group. Put all of your names at the top-- if you leave off a name, they will not get a grade for this station.
IF you finish early you can finish a station you left incomplete.
3- STATION THREE- Writing prompt about who are "agents of change."
In your journal- start on a clean page, date it 10/25/17 and Title It: Agents of Change.
Write a paragraph answering this question:
How do you think you could lend a helping hand to other and be an Agent of Change in our community and/or our world?
IF you finish early you can finish a station you left incomplete.
4- STATION FOUR- Brainstorming what you think needs to change in our world.
With your group- take one of the Brainstorming sheet and together fill out each of the boxes.
You need to list in EACH BOX a change you all think should happen or help our community.
You can do bullet points and/or explain changes you think should happen/help for each topic listed.
Have at least 3 items listed or a short paragraph written.

3- Then write about what you dream about doing in the future-- is it a sport like Queen Harrison or Donald Brown? Is it a career in a field you are passionate about? Is it about starting a church or being the first to do something or winning an award? Write about what you dream about doing with your life or in the future.
CLASS ACTIVITY:
1- Once we're done with the bell ringer-- put your Journals away and read the Newsela article assigned to you in your Binder.
2- We are reading Opinion: The athlete as agent of change as our Article of the Week. It is posted in Google Classroom. Make sure you READ THE INSTRUCTIONS and know what and how I am grading this assignment.
3- Complete all of the annotations, take the quiz, AND complete the writing assignment.
4- Your grade depends on you completing all 3 parts of the assignment.
5- IF you do not have a Chromebook, get a hard copy from Ms. Hurst.
6- Some of you will have hard copies given to you- if you get a hard copy- READ this copy.
7- IF you have a hard copy- please get a highlighter from the black cabinet/red supply boxes and HIGHLIGHT important information.
8- Take the quiz and write the writing prompt below on the back of your packet.
WRITING PROMPT: Write a short paragraph explaining how a person in the article changed. Use details from the article to show how they changed.

BELL RINGER:
1- We'll watch this video about Queen Harrison USA Track and Field Hurdler
2- In your journal, find a clean page, date it 10/23/17 and Title It: My PASSION
3- Then write about what your passion is-- is it a sport like Queen Harrison? Is it music, or band, or church? Is it your family? Explain in a paragraph what it is.
My passion is writing-- I practice it every day and enjoy when I focus my attention on a story or a poem or one of my novels. I wish I had more time to write, but I know that when I do put my energy into writing, I work hard at getting my words down and ready for people to read them. Sharing my writing is probably the hardest thing I do-- but I know this is part of my process. Thankfully, even negative comments about my writing doesn't kill my passion for it.
CLASS ACTIVITY:
1- Once we're done with the bell ringer-- put your Journals away and get a Contest Form on the black cabinet at the back of the room (by the Journal Rack).
2- Fill it out using the information about your Holocaust story or poem.
3- PRINT- use clear and nice handwriting. TAKE YOUR TIME AND MAKE IT NEAT. This form is going with your piece to the contest.
4- In your group, trade Chromebooks and have your piece PROOFREAD.
5- You are looking for--
A- Basic typos-- pronouns not capitalized-- Names, Cities, Countries, Nazis, Germans, and the pronoun I, as well as I'm, I've etc.
B- Spelling errors-- if something has a red squiggly line under it- GOOGLE HOW TO SPELL IT CORRECTLY.
C- Spacing issues-- short stories MUST be double-spaced and have indented paragraphs. Poem stanzas must be single-spaced and double-spaced between stanzas.
D- Poems MUST BE ONE PAGE. Short stories must be 750 words-- check their word count.
E- Read the poem/story and make sure it makes sense-- if it doesn't point it out to the writer.
6- Have TWO people read your stuff and PROOFREAD.
7- Then finish your piece and turn it into Google Classroom. The link is: Imagining the Holocaust- Creative Writing Contest Piece.
You will need to ADD it from your Google Drive. If you do not know how to do it, ask your neighbor or just try and figure it out. It's not hard.
8- Put your Contest sheets in the WHITE Turn In Box. If you get done before the bell rings-- READ YOUR IRB.
