10" x 7"
Watercolor, graphite pencil, rocks, super glue, watercolor paper
This piece was inspired by the idea of home and what that looks like in my life. The ocean and islands play a large role in my life and convey feelings of home. I chose to paint this image because it brings me back to the ocean and my childhood, and this specific place brings back fond memories of cookouts on French island.
I used graphite pencils and sketched out an outline and then used watercolor for the majority of the piece. I collected small rocks and pebbles from the rocky beach near my house, and using super glue, I stuck them to the paper, replicating the rocky shore in the image.
I started out brainstorming and sketching out a few different ideas. I went with this one and sketched it out on watercolor paper. With the help of a reference image, I painted out this landscape and left the beach blank. After collecting some rocks off the beach, I used super glue and attached them to the section of rocky shore. I thought rocks would be fun to use and add some variety to my materials. They connect to the scene and enhance the overall theme of home and closeness. I also wanted to intensify the colors so the piece is more vibrant. The brush and trees are bright green and the ocean is bright blue which helps to convey the idea of home.
