Mixed Media Contour Design

The Colorless Faces

Watercolor, oil pastel, and ink on watercolor paper

9'' x 12''

With this project, I was guided by the contour drawings. Once I created these, I had a general idea of how I wanted to complete this piece. I wanted to paint a bright and colorful background with a  diverse range of colors. Once the background was formed I thought it more meaningful to leave the faces colorless. I was guided by the color and how variations of color can impact a piece.

When creating this art I started out with watercolor paper and I made a background using watercolors. I used a pen to draw the contour faces. I also used more watercolors and oil pastels to fill in the people.

I had a few different ideas going into the piece. My original idea was to use primarily oil pastels and create a flat gray background with a window.  I began creating this and decided to start over.  I thought it would be more fun and symbolic if I painted a colorful watercolor background. Then I placed the cutouts of the faces on the bottom of my paper and colored them gray and the eyes various colors.
