A Dragon with a String

Drawing Paper and Graphite and Colored Pencils

9'' x 12''

The main idea that guided my work was the prompt to draw a dragon playing with string. I wanted to create a mystical and otherworldly background because the dragon fit perfectly for that sort of scene. I drew the mountains and the planets to add to the mythical theme.  I felt that if the dragon looked powerful and distinct, its surroundings had to match. Instead of drawing a small piece of string held by the claws of the dragon, I drew the dragon doing the Cats Cradle. All of the components of this drawing add to the overall sharpness and intensity of the landscape.

I began with a 9'' by 12'' piece of drawing paper. I then drew with an HB 2 graphite pencil to draw the flying dragon. I shaded the various details on the dragon and attempted to accentuate certain parts as well. While also using the HB 2 pencil to draw the background made up of the mountains, ocean, planets/moons, and the sky. To finish it off I used a bright yellow-ish, orange-colored pencil to draw the string.

I started the process by brainstorming ideas on how to draw different ways for a dragon to play with string. I first began drawing the dragon and after many attempts, drew a dragon in the sky. I looked up the general physical aspects of a dragon for a basic idea. I wanted the dragon to look powerful, yet not intimidating. By doing this I drew it in the center of the page taking up space with its vast wings. In order to follow the theme of power and mythology, I created large moons and planets rising up over the horizon or hovering in the sky. I wanted the planets to stand out to create a more daunting demeanor, so I shaded one side while erasing the pencil on the other side. This added to the appearance by making them pop out. It was important for the dragon to be doing the Cats Cradle because it complemented the other intricate details in the piece.
