The Bird on the Branch

Graphite Pencil

6'' x 9''

The main idea that guided my work was the splatter of ink that inspired the creation. At first glance, I could make out the silhouette of a little bird, so I continued with that thought. I create a scene with the bird perched on the branch in nothing but white. This represented the hope that could be found in the future of the unexpected.

After realizing the ink splatter resembled a bird, I drew with an HB 2 graphite pencil for the rest of the drawing to fill it all in. I sketched out a branch and shaded it in. I tried to create the texture of the branch in the pencil strokes and edges. I left the rest of the page white because I thought that was what it needed.

The process of this project began by looking at the spot of ink for some time and noticing that it had a similar shape to a bird. I filled in the gaps and holes to make the little bird as whole as I could. I then added legs that were perched on the branch. I drew the branch with the purpose to create a ledge for the bird to sit on, in an abyss of white. I tried to create the feeling of being alone, while also still having something to hold on to. The little feet of the bird grip tightly to the branch as if ready for the unknown.
