Nature #3

Mountains in Washington

6" x 24"

Bark, acrylic paint, and gesso

When making this piece I was guided by themes of nature and my inquiry question of "Why is nature so inspiring?". I created my painting on bark because of its connection to nature.

I began this investigation scavenging for bark on dead trees outside. Once I found a piece, I gessoed the surface. I then used acrylic paint for the rest of the piece.

I started out looking for an image that displayed ideas of nature and its inspiring qualities. I like this image of a landscape in Washington I visited this summer. I also thought it would be a fun experiment to paint on bark. Once I gesso'd the surface I went in with paint and completed the piece. The rugged look of the bark further conveys nature's organic and natural look. The bark also broke but I don't think it negatively affected the piece and could potentially further the ideas of nature's imperfections.
