Spaceship in Bubbles
Gelli printing plate, washable markers, colored pencils, pen on drawing paper
7" x 5"
The main idea behind this artwork was to create something playful and imaginative, guided by the background and prompt. I started by creating a background with Gelli prints. This was a fun way to create a colorful and busy background. I wanted to make a silly background with these gelli prints, so I drew a bunch of circles with various colors and sizes and printed them on the drawing paper. I then chose the prompt, "a silly spaceship", and created my design. I wanted to make a spaceship that matches the background, so I made a small, goofy vehicle with a cute, green alien. I also incorporated yellow into the piece to unify the foreground and background.
To create this piece, I used gelli printing plates along with washable markers to develop the background. I drew circles of differing sizes and colors onto the plates and transferred them onto my paper by pressing down and printing. I used colored pencils for the spaceship and additional details on the bubbles. For example, I used yellow colored pencils to draw a glowing light from the spaceship and the reflection on the surrounding bubbles. I used more of the markers to darken and deepen the colors of the bubbles and spaceship.
The process began with experimenting with Gelli prints, which is a fun, new technique. I explored how the different colors and shapes layered together form an abstract background while also creating movement or energy within the piece. It was an efficient way to use up space and design a unique pattern. After choosing a prompt, I tried to match the feeling of the background with the subject. I designed a small, silly spaceship fitting the bubbles and bright colors.
