Fabric Collage

For this piece of artwork, I was very inspired by Maine's ocean landscapes. I love sunsets over ocean scenes and thought that fabric would capture this well. The bright and clear color and shape of the fabric would form this landscape well. To create this, I didn't use an image and was inspired by what I already knew about the ocean, islands, and sunsets. 

Starting off, I used a cardboard poster board as a base to layer the fabric on top. I sorted through lots and lots of fabric, cut all the fabric into specified pieces, and used hot glue to attach it to the board. 

I began by choosing the mix of fabric material I wanted to use for my piece. There were many bins and a lot of options for fabric so I tried to pick the most ideal pieces. I also wanted a nice assortment of colors and textures to create more movement and contrast in my artwork. This would also help form a more realistic landscape with colors that matched its characteristics and features. I enjoyed cutting the fabric into slivers and pieces and layering them to build a pattern and depth to the piece. I also chose to place the sun in the middle so the reflection could go around the islands and add some fun contrast to the dark blue ocean. I wanted to add more color so I mixed in a bit of pink or salmon color to the sunset and some strips into the ocean. I thought these colors would all contrast but merge nicely, as well. I also wanted to bring some of the dark blue ocean color back into the sky for a more solidified and completed look.
