Gel Pen and Colored-Pencil on Printmaking Paper

What guided my work was the various patterns and lines I drew on my page. I started off with simple lines and then went from there to create the other patterns. My imagination guided me as well as the outline of the flying Egret. The edges of the bird helped me with the sizing and complexity of the patterns across the bird.

The materials I used when creating this piece were a gel pen and drawing paper. I used the pen to form shapes and patterns across the silhouette of the Egret in the air. I went from a dark-black shade to a white shade in 10 different patterns across the bird.

The process began with the simple outline of the bird. I researched the specific bird silhouette and drew it free-hand onto my paper. I then drew 10 different patterns onto the page from a dark shade to a light shade. I wanted to have the dark sections near the top to create a shade from dark to light from the top to bottom. The black shades are near the top creating more space for more complex patterns. The complexity makes the bird look multi-layered, with a deeper level of meaning. The intricate lines make the bird look greater and more elaborate than a simple Egret.
