Duck Stamp

The Watchful Wood Duck

9" x 12"

Watercolor pencils and Guache

When creating this painting I was guided by my several reference images of the wood duck. I was guided by a goal in mind for a simple yet highly detailed piece of art. This led to a somewhat plain background with more intricate details on the duck. I also wanted to maintain a clear and distinguished look by painting and drawing sharp and thoughtful lines and colors in certain areas.

I began with a pencil, sketching it all out. I then went it with gauche for the background and a few details on the duck. I primarily used Prisma colored pencils for the duck and log.

I started out choosing my prefered duck. I chose the Wood Duck! I thought it had great potential with its color and complex feather patterns. I began with the background and painted it a simple green. I then went in with the colored pencils and created the duck and log. I did a lot of burnishing with the Prisma colored pencils for a more blended and realistic look. I also went with the simple background because I wanted the duck to stand out and contrast with the green.
