Kite Flying
18" x 24"
Watercolor on watercolor paper
For this project, I was guided by the Donate Life Design Competition, where you create an artwork and a sentence that encourages organ and tissue donation. I was inspired by the idea of a simple yet positive scene that could spread the idea of support and improvement. I decided to create a scene of a boy flying a kite in a field. The wind is pushing the kite and lifting it in the sky just as someone is donating organs to help someone.
I used watercolor primarily for this piece. I first used a graphite pencil to sketch a quick outline on the paper. I then went in with watercolor paint and watercolor brush pens.
This process began by brainstorming ideas and scenes that encourage donation. I had a few ideas like a sunrise, a cup of coffee, and kite flying. I decided on the kite flying idea and sketched it out. I created a simple sky with large brushstrokes of light blue paint. The skyline is low to make a large sky and emphasize the height of the kite. I used watercolor brush pens to create a detailed, grassy, yellowish-green field. I then made a red kite, so it popped out against the rest of the piece. I enjoyed using these brush pens because I was able to capture more detail in the boys' clothes, the field, and the kite. When adding the writing, I edited the photo online, added text, and changed the font so it mixed well with the composition.
