Nature #1

Wolfe's Neck Point

6" x 6"

Colored pencils, wood, and rainwater

The ideas behind this project or my sustained investigation guided this artwork. I am curious why nature has a very inspirational, enchanting, and mysterious quality. I chose an image that reflected those aspects and it is what guided me through this process. A very local place can convey these themes in nature well. I took this photo in the harbor capturing the end of Wolfe's Neck Point.

I used wooden blocks or frames for the base and I knew this way I could incorporate some nature by using the wood. I used watercolor and Prisma colored pencils and drew the landscape across the surface. I also collected rainwater and used it with the watercolor pencils. This was another way that connected the medium to the message conveyed. I had a lot of fun drawing on wood and discovered its unique qualities differing from paper.  The wood allows more blending and interaction between the artist and art piece.

For the Sustained Investigation #1 I brainstormed various ideas about nature. I found this peaceful picture of the water in my camera roll and I thought it would convey my inquiry well. I started out sketching and then by using colored pencils and collected rain water I completed the piece. I chose to draw on wood because it's a fun way to experiment with different materials while also integrating nature and bringing my question to light.
