3D Design

When I first signed up for this class, I wasn't sure how it was going to go because I lean towards 2D such as drawing or painting when creating art. Over the course of this class, my art skills were pushed and improved as I adjusted to creating 3D sculptures. The work I made this semester shows my strengths and weaknesses as a learner through the challenges and successes I experienced. My art illustrates my weaknesses as a learner by the difficulty of adapting to the new art style and continuing the creativity and brainstorming within 3D art. I struggled a bit with generating ideas that would be possible to create in 3D sculptures. My work also displayed my strengths as a learner with my ability to adjust to 3D art and also have fun while doing it! I learned that I do enjoy making art 3 dimensionally with a variety of materials like clay, paper, cardboard, and even wool. I explored a new kind of art and through the process, I improved. My artwork conveys my improvement in this class when looking back at my first pieces and comparing them with my latest works. I can see how I have become more comfortable with these art mediums and explored their potential more fully. I can see the growth I have made from the start of the class to the end. For example, I notice the improvement from my beginning pieces such as "Full Moon" and "Busy" to more complex works such as "Two Floating Otters" and "Wind". 

One of the more challenging projects I completed this semester was the hands sculpture. We created alginate molds with our hands and then built on to it or chipped away the sculpture. I also decided to add color with watercolor paint. I struggled with having it all come together nicely. The colors didn’t come out right and I also struggled when adding on materials. I think with the flexibility of the project I didn’t execute it well. I should have had a more firm plan and followed through on the idea. While there were plenty of challenges in this class, there were also projects I had success with. I am most proud of the clay sgraffito. I made a clay sculpture of an otter holding its baby in its arms. I covered it with black glazing and scratched fur marks across its surface. I enjoyed this project and had fun forming its shape, firing, and glazing it. I loved how it turned out, and it mostly matched what I hoped it to be. I also think I was successful with my artwork "Wind". This was a fun project and I enjoyed working with unique materials like wool, wire, and a foam block. I found little plants outside that surprisingly closely resembled pine trees! I am proud of this piece with my gathering of various materials and making them fit together in a nice and simple composition. 

I had a lot of fun making art this past semester in 3D design. I have learned useful skills in sculptural art and can use these in the future! I learned how to better manipulate clay and produce desired products. I will definitely use these new skills in future projects in the summer and beyond. In the summer I want to explore more art mediums and discover different ways to make art. I also have always wanted to try oil painting and the summer is a great time to do that! I plan on getting outside and doing art in nature and in all kinds of landscapes like on the water, in the forest, and in the mountains. I love being outdoors and I love making art so this is a perfect combination and opportunity. Creating art is also a fun way to capture my environment! In the future, beyond summer, I aim to continue improving my artistic abilities and make sure to always find time to make art!
