Baby Owl

7" x 3.5" x 4"

Paper bag, tape, tissue paper, origami, and glue

When creating this sculpture I was inspired and guided by the use of paper in all forms. I used paper to create the armature, to cover the surface, and to make the feet. I was also guided by the vision I had for this owl. When starting out, I was hoping for a more realistic-looking owl, perched on a branch. As time went on and after I left the first attempt at school, I revised my ideas and was guided by new ones.

For my original owl, I started with newsprint and made an armature with tape. I then paper machéd the surface of it. For my official/final owl I used a paper bag and crumpled it up into an oval shape. I then covered it with tape and then covered the surface with ripped-up tissue paper and origami paper with the use of wet glue.

With this paper sculpture project, I began my owl in class and created the general armature and the white paper maché surface. I accidentally left it at school so I restarted and created my new baby owl at home. I altered the shape a bit and went for a more simplistic and cute look. I also added color with the tissue and origami paper. To finalize it, I added two yellow feet made out of folded-up origami paper.
