Arrive Alive

I created this piece for the Joe Bornstein Arrive Alive Contest. I was mainly inspired by the idea of showing how dangerous and fast-changing situations like drink-driving crashes can be. I used online reference images of car crashes to help me understand what actually happens in these moments and how to realistically depict the damage and the emotions behind them. I wanted the piece to feel dark and intense, but also communicate a clear message about responsibility and the consequences of distracted driving.

I used watercolor paint as my base material to build up color, depth, and tone. I focused on creating a smoky, blurred background to represent the aftermath of the crash and to give the scene a heavier, more emotional feeling. After that, I used a black gel pen to go over details, add definition, and bring out the wrecked structure of the car and the surrounding objects. The contrast between the soft watercolor and sharp pen lines helped create a rougher and more unsettling look.

For my process, I started by painting watercolor layers to set the tone and composition. I slowly built up darker areas to create contrast and focus on the crash scene. I included details like broken bottles to suggest drink driving, along with oil and blood on the ground to show the severity of what happened without making it overly graphic. I added the gel pen at the end to refine the details and make certain parts stand out more, helping the piece feel more complete and impactful.
