Colored Pencil on Printmaking Paper

The main idea that guided my abstract shoe drawing was the zoomed-in view of my shoe. I had to draw something that accurately represented the contour lines of the close-up shoe. I wanted to create a detailed scene but also match the shape and proportion of the original shoe sketch so you could still identify the shoe lines. In this piece of art, I tried to make it as realistic as possible, but I let some things become less precise and more abstract. I also created a scene that relates to myself, and as a result, it was more fun to draw.

For this abstract shoe drawing, I started with printmaking paper and then used colored pencils to complete the piece. I first sketched out the basic lines with graphite pencils and then used colored pencils to finalize it.

When I began this process I chose the closest zoomed-in shoe view. From there I brainstormed what I could create out of that. As soon as I looked at the lines I noticed a clear outline of a gondola. I really liked how a part of a shoe can transform into an entirely different thing. I then drew the red gondola with layers of colored pencil and it formed a more solidified and even waxy look. When I was drawing the sky and mountains I drew fewer layers of color and this made a rougher and lighter appearance. I think the contrast between the two textures is important because it adds to the overall quality and purpose of the piece.
