EZ Cut Block

When I began with this project, I was guided by the idea of being able to carve something out of a block and think about negative space. I liked the three birds perched on a branch and decided to go with that option. I then had to create four prints: a solid-colored, a multi-colored one, a unique surface, and a hand-colored one.
The materials I used during this project included graphite pencil, sharpie, and drawing paper for the idea generation sketches. I used an EZ cut block and carving tools to create the carved block. And for the printing and finalizing process, I used black, yellow, and green ink, a block of wood, and colored pencils.
At the start of this process, I sketched out my initial ideas. Once I decided on the main subject of this piece, I carved it out and began to print. During the printing process, I made several prints in each category before choosing the final four. This step took the most time and precision because of the need for clean borders/no smudges, nice placement, and even ink application. The choice of colors was also important when choosing them for the multi-colored and hand-colored. I drew three vibrant birds against the black background because the color fills in the blank space and adds character to the piece.
