Mapping Design

Sketched outline

Our Town

Watercolor and gel pen

9'' x 12''

When creating this piece I was guided by the idea of map design and how the movement in my life can be created into a map. I drew the roads that brought me to my house and to school. Drawing this road led to the drawing and painting of more of the town and so on until it filled the page. The town and its geography influenced the colors and patterns of the trees, fields, and water.

This art is made from watercolor as the primary medium. I also used a gel pen to outline details on the map.

I began with a brainstorming process to generate ideas that could form a map design. I thought about my walkways around school and after school and my drive back home. I decided it would be fun to create a view of Freeport that incorporates the path from my home to school. I used a red pen to draw footsteps between these two locations. I wanted to go for a more playful and simple look, so that influenced my color choice and line shape and movement. I also wanted to paint this from a unique perspective and thought it would be a fun challenge.
