I chose this reference image and created this scene because it represents my home and childhood. I played the piano all the time and had lessons every week or so; it was a large part of my childhood and home. Music has been important to me and has played a key role in my family. I thought this image captures these feelings well and also includes my cat lying on the piano! I liked the layout of this image, with the light cast onto the piano keys and music sheets, and the stack of books and a metronome sitting on the piano. 

I used colored pencils for most of the piece, blending and burnishing as I went. I cut out a few music scales from an old book I used to use, the same one in the reference image, and glued them on the piece. I tried to blend and deepen the contrast by creating dark and light areas. I love using colored pencils because I can get precision while also blending the material for a more rough and abstract look. 

I began brainstorming and sketched out a few ideas in my notebook. I went with this one because I loved the unique perspective looking down at the scene. When creating this, I had a few goals in mind, like continuing to develop the contrast and material synthesis. I tried to darken parts of the piano and my hair to build the juxtaposition against the bright areas. I made sure to draw the piano keys brightly so they popped out. I also did this with the lamps as their bright hue stood against the darker wall and piano.
