This week, in addition to revieiwing main idea, we still start considering the importance of supporting details. To begin this lesson, browse through the slideshow below. In that presentation, we will talk about how supporting details are used to prove your main idea. In other words, which statement is more convincing:
New Orleans is a great city.
New Orleans is a great city because it has added 12,000 new jobs in the last year.
Notice, the use of a statistic makes the argument more convincing. In the following slideshow, we will talk about the 5 most common types of supporting details, which are:
Facts
Statistics
Opinions
Examples
Personal Observations and Experiences
In our own writing, it's important to understand the supporting details are used to explain our main idea. They can help make paragraphs stronger and overall arguments more convincing. And on the Reading, Social Studies, and Science sections of the exam, we will need to read passages and be able to understand the difference between a main idea and supporting detail. Remember, the main idea is the overall message of a passage, whereas supporting details are smaller points used to explain and defend the main idea.
This week, we will again turn to Google News to improve our digital research skills. Follow the directions below to complete this week's assignment focused on main idea and supporting details.
