Week 4: Area and Perimeter
Start Here
If you were building a fence around your house, how big would it need to be? What if you were laying carpet in your bedroom: how much would you need to buy? These are questions that can be solved by finding the perimeter (fence) and area (carpet) of shapes.
Understanding how to use formulas and calculations to find the perimeter and area of different shapes will be our focus this week.
Lesson Objectives
You can use this as a checklist to monitor and measure your learning! At this end of this module, you should be able to:
Describe what the perimeter and area of a shape tells us
Understand how to use a formula to find the perimeter or area of a shape
Find the area and perimeter of shapes including solving for missing sides
Check out the LESSON ACTIVITIES next.
Lesson Activities
You can also use this as a checklist to make sure you've finished the entire assignment:
Review the formula sheet in Part 1
Draw shapes and find their perimeter and area in Part 2
Practice perimeter and area problems on Khan in Part 3
Optional - Join a group video chat on Tuesday, October 6th, 6-7pm
Estimated time to complete: 2-3 hours
These activities are due by 9pm on Tuesday, October 6th
Part 1 - Review the formula sheet
On the HiSET math section, you will be given a formula sheet. It will include the formulas for many types of shapes. So as long as you can recognize the shape, the only step you'll need to take is to apply the formula properly. To get started, check out this formula sheet (click it to view a larger version).
And now that you have a sense of what formulas look like, check out this introductory video on how to find the area and perimeter of different shapes.
Then move on to PART 2 below!
Part 2 - Drawing our houses!
To practice with finding the perimeter and area, we will again use Google Draw this week to practice drawing shapes and finding the values of each.
Then when you finish the writing activity, you can move on to PART 3!
Part 3 - Practice suggestions on Khan
Check out each of the following videos and activities. After you click on the link, remember to check that you are logged-in to your Khan account. And you can skip topics that you are confident with!
Part 4 - Optional - Join us for the weekly live video chat and tutoring session!
There will be 1-hour webinars for students and teachers to get online together, ask questions, and review coursework. Students can choose to ask questions or just listen along as we work through the course. The first webinar will be held:
Tuesday, October 6th, 6-7pm
