Week 3: The Coordinate Plane
Start Here
Graphs are useful tools for displaying data (information). For example, we can use a graph to show average temperature during the year in New Orleans.
This week, we will look at the Coordinate Plane, which is the basis of any graph, as we look to understand how to build a graph and plot points.
Lesson Objectives
You can use this as a checklist to monitor and measure your learning! At this end of this module, you should be able to:
Understand the structure of the coordinate plane
Plot points on a coordinate plane (graphing)
Check out the LESSON ACTIVITIES next.
Lesson Activities
You can also use this as a checklist to make sure you've finished the entire assignment:
Watch an introductory video in Part 1
Draw a coordinate plane in Part 2
Practice coordinate plane skills on Khan Academy in Part 3
Optional - Join a group video chat on Tuesday, September 29th, 6-7pm
Estimated time to complete: 2-3 hours
These activities are due by 9pm on Tuesday, September 29th.
Part 1 - Video introduction to the coordinate plane
The coordinate plane is built with 2 axis (the x and y-axis), and we can use it to plot points like (-2,4). In this video, we will look at the basics behind a Coordinate Plane, including:
Axis
Quadrants
The origin
Points
...and more to get started with understanding the coordinate plane
Then move on to PART 2 below!
Part 2 - Drawing a coordinate plane
Google Draw is a great tool for creating our own images and sketches. In this week's activity, we will apply our understanding of the Coordinate Plane by drawing our own version using Google Draw. Click the link or icon below to get started.
Then when you finish the writing activity, you can move on to PART 3!
Part 3 - Practice suggestions on Khan
Check out each of the following videos and activities. After you click on the link, remember to check that you are logged-in to your Khan account. And you can skip topics that you are confident with!
Part 4 - Optional - Join us for the weekly live video chat and tutoring session!
There will be 1-hour webinars for students and teachers to get online together, ask questions, and review coursework. Students can choose to ask questions or just listen along as we work through the course. The first webinar will be held:
Tuesday, September 29th, 6-7pm
