Week 2: Angles
Start Here
How far is it from your house to Delgado? 1 mile? 300 yards? 10 minutes? Each of these units are different ways to measure distance and/or time (mile, yards, minutes). This week, we will look at degrees, which is the unit we use to measure angles. For example, when a basketball player does a "360," that term comes from Geometry (a 360o circle is a full circle or full rotation).
Lesson Objectives
You can use this as a checklist to monitor and measure your learning! At this end of this module, you should be able to:
Define angle terms
Find the value of missing angles in various shapes
Understand different types of angles and angle relationships
Check out the LESSON ACTIVITIES next.
Lesson Activities
You can also use this as a checklist to make sure you've finished the entire assignment:
Watch a video introduction to finding missing angles in Part 1
Create an "angles" vocabulary guide in Part 2
Complete practice problems on Khan Academy in Part 3
(Optional) - Participate in the live video chat in Part 4
Estimated time to complete: 2-3 hours
These activities are due by 9pm on Tuesday, September 22nd.
Part 1 - Video introduction to finding missing angles
One of the most common problems on the HiSET math is to find the missing angle in a shape (like a triangle). This involves basic math based on our understanding of shapes and angles. For example, if we know that all angles in a triangle will always add up to 180o, and we are given 2 of the angles (like 90o and 51o), what would the remaining angle have to be?
To get started with this topic, check out this short introductory video to finding missing angles.
Then move on to PART 2 below!
Part 2 - Create a vocabulary guide
Like we discussed during last week's video chat, Geometry involves a lot of new terms. So, we will continue last week's activity by creating a 2nd vocabulary guide for new terms about angles.
Then when you finish the writing activity, you can move on to PART 3!
Part 3 - Practice suggestions on Khan
Check out each of the following videos and activities. After you click on the link, remember to check that you are logged-in to your Khan account. And you can skip topics that you are confident with!
Part 4 - Optional - Join us for the weekly live video chat and tutoring session!
There will be 1-hour webinars for students and teachers to get online together, ask questions, and review coursework. Students can choose to ask questions or just listen along as we work through the course. The first webinar will be held:
Tuesday, September 22nd, 6-7pm
