Each week, we will focus on mastering specific objectives. Some will focus on reading skills. Others will emphasize writing skills. And, we will always be working on our critical thinking and computer literacy skills. At the start of each week, you should be in the habit of reading and reviewing the objectives. Try to determine which you already know, and which you still need to practice. This will allow you to be strategic with the time you spend studying.
The objectives for Week 1 are as follows:
Understand and practice "Active Reading Strategies" that will be used all semester (and all life!);
Be able to find a news article using the search feature on news.google.com;
Make an educated guess about the main idea of an article using clues such as the title, images, and other aspects of an online article;

One of the most important skills on the HiSET exam is to be able to read and analyze an article. Understanding the main idea is the first step in this process. To get started, check out this short article on how to determine the main idea of a passage.
During this unit, we will be studying various social issues, but we will wait until Week 2 to get started with that. For now, you should spend time getting familiar with Google News, which is a search engine that indexes all news outlets around the world. So instead of just being able to find articles from CNN, the New York Times, or the Times Picayune, Google News allows you to search and find article
s from all over the world.
Your assignment for this week is as follows:
