Week 5: Volume and Surface Area
Start HereWhereas perimeter and area are measuring flat shapes (like the distance around your yard or the amount of space on your floor), volume and surface area will look at 3-D objects. In other words, how many soda can you fit in a 1-liter? How much water in a pool? And how many windows would we need on that new skyscraper?
Lesson Objectives
You can use this as a checklist to monitor and measure your learning! At this end of this module, you should be able to:
Understand the difference between perimeter, area, and volume
Find the volume of shapes with a formula
Explain how we can use our understanding of perimeter and area to find the surface area of 3D shapes
Check out the LESSON ACTIVITIES next.
Lesson Activities
You can also use this as a checklist to make sure you've finished the entire assignment:
Watch the video in Part 1
Write about perimeter, area, and volume in Part 2
Practice using formulas in Khan Academy in Part 3
Optional - Join a group video chat on Wednesday, October 14th, 6-7pm
Estimated time to complete: 2-3 hours
These activities are due by 9pm on Tuesday, October 13th
Part 1 - Watch and learn about perimeter, area, and volume
Let's start by looking at the difference between perimeter, area, and volume. All 3 are measurements, but they measure different shapes and have different uses in the real world.
Then move on to PART 2 below!
Part 2 - Define perimeter, area, and volume
To practice our understanding of perimeter, area, and volume, check out the short writing activity in Google docs below.
Week 5 - Volume and Surface Area
Then when you finish the writing activity, you can move on to PART 3!
Part 3 - Practice suggestions on Khan
Check out each of the following videos and activities. After you click on the link, remember to check that you are logged-in to your Khan account. And you can skip topics that you are confident with!
Part 4 - Optional - Join us for the weekly live video chat and tutoring session!
There will be 1-hour webinars for students and teachers to get online together, ask questions, and review coursework. Students can choose to ask questions or just listen along as we work through the course. The first webinar will be held:
Wednesday, October 14th, 6-7pm
