Week 4: One and Two-Step Equations
Start Here
Do you agree with the following?
5 + 3 = 8
8 - 3 = 5
Yes or no? And if so, do you notice any patterns? Understanding inverse operations is the first and maybe most important part of mastering how to solve algebraic equations, and that will be our focus this week!
To get started, check out the LESSON OBJECTIVES next.
Lesson Objectives
You can use this as a checklist to monitor and measure your learning! At this end of this module, you should be able to:
Understand the relationship between addition/subtraction and multiplication/division
Solve one and two-step algebraic expressions
To continue with Week 1, check out the LESSON ACTIVITIES next.
Lesson Activities
You can also use this as a checklist to make sure you've finished the entire assignment:
Watch a video about inverse operations in Part 1
Write about inverse operations in Part 2
Practice algebra skills on Khan Academy in Part 3
<Optional> Join our live video chat on Friday, August 7th at 1:30pm in Part 4
Estimated time to complete: 2-3 hours
These activities are due by 9pm on Sunday, August 9th
Part 1 - What are inverse operations?
If we know that 5+3=8, don't we also know that 8-3=5? This is because addition and subtraction are the inverse, or opposite of each other. Understanding inverse operations if the first and most important stage of solving any algebraic equation. This chart explains inverse relationships more:
Next, let's watch a short video about inverse equations. As you watch, try to focus on answering the question: What is the inverse of addition? Subtraction? Multiplication? Division?
Then move on to PART 2 below!
Part 2 - Create an Algebra guide
To practice our understanding of inverse operations, we will create a short guide to solving Algebraic equations. You can access the activity through the link here.
Week 4 - One and Two-Step Equations
When you finish the writing activity, you can move on to PART 3!
Part 3 - Practice suggestions on Khan
Remember to find time to get on Khan Academy to practice each suggested skill. Notice that this week, some of the skills will be found in your course on "ALGEBRA BASICS". You can also access them with the links in the spreadsheet on this page. So, next, time you log-in to your Khan Academy account:
Click on the "ALGEBRA BASICS" courses
There will be a few skill suggestions from me. These are the focus this week, so click into each of them and try to complete all your suggested activities by this Sunday!
Part 4 - Optional - Join us for the weekly live video chat and tutoring session!
There will be 1-hour webinars for students and teachers to get online together, ask questions, and review coursework. Students can choose to ask questions or just listen along as we work through the course. The first webinar will be held:
Friday, August 7th, 1:30-2:30pm
