Welcome to Module 7, the last in our unit on the persuasive essay and minimum wage. In this module, we will talk about:
The full outline of the essay
How to write the introduction and conclusion
How to proofread and revise the essay
The Prompt
Do you support or oppose raising the minimum wage? Why or why not?
Everything in your essay should be related to answering this question.
As a reminder, the 5-paragraph essay should follow this outline:
Introduction
Reason #1
Reason #2
Considering the Opposition
Conclusion
If you've followed along with the first 6 modules, you should be able to copy and paste a lot of the old content into a final draft!
The Introduction and Conclusion
Most students over-complicate the introduction and conclusion. On the HiSET essay, they can actually be pretty straightforward.
The Introduction
1st sentence: Introduce the debate/question (what's the topic of the essay?)
2nd sentence: Provide background (why is it important to talk about this topic?)
3rd sentence: State your position (do you support or oppose the issue?)
The Conclusion
1st sentence: Restate your position (do you support or oppose the issue?)
2nd sentence: Restate your reasons (what were the 2 main reasons for why you believe this?)
3rd sentence: Give a “call to action” (try to inspire your readers to take action based on what you've written)

Proofreading
Read out loud and listen for mistakes; sometimes students turn in essays right after they finish; make sure to read it out loud and fix the mistakes that you find;
Use the review features in Google Docs; remember, red-underlines are spelling errors, and green underlines are grammar errors. You can right-click to find suggestions on how to fixes these mistakes
Clearly show where you paragraphs start and end; you can skip lines and/or indent
When you finish the essay, put it away for a day and then re-read it; sometimes looking at it with fresh eyes can help you make improvements!
