Week 6: The Pythagorean Theorem
Start Here
If you are trying to get to the other corner of a park, is it faster to walk around the sides or to go across from corner to corner? How do you know?
Goals
You can use this as a checklist to monitor and measure your learning! At this end of this module, you should be able to:
Explain how the Pythagorean Theorem can be used
Use a formula to find the length of a missing side of a right triangle
Check out the LESSON ACTIVITIES next.
Activities
You can also use this as a checklist to make sure you've finished the entire assignment:
Watch a video introduction to the theorem Part 1
Draw a right triangle and apply the Pythagorean theorem in Part 2
Practice using the formula in Khan activities in Part 3
Optional - Join a group video chat on Tuesday, October 20th, 6-7pm
Estimated time to complete: 2-3 hours
These activities are due by 9pm on Tuesday, October 20th
Part 1 - Watch a video introduction
The Pythagorean Theorem can be used to find the length of a missing side of a right-triangle. In other words, if we know the lengths of 2 sides of a right-triangle (like in this sample picture), we can use a formula to find the length of the third side. In other words, we can figure out if it's faster to cut through a park or walk around the sides.
Check out this short video introduction on how to use the Pythagorean Theorem.
Then move on to PART 2 below!
Part 2 - Draw a real-world example
Now that we better understand what the Pythagorean Theorem is and how ti can be used, let's apply to the real-world. When is a good situation when you could use the formula to find useful information? Click the Google Doc icon to get started!
Week 6 - The Pythagorean Theorem
Then when you finish the writing activity, you can move on to PART 3!
Part 3 - Practice suggestions on Khan
Check out each of the following videos and activities. After you click on the link, remember to check that you are logged-in to your Khan account. And you can skip topics that you are confident with!
Part 4 - Optional - Join us for the weekly live video chat and tutoring session!
There will be 1-hour webinars for students and teachers to get online together, ask questions, and review coursework. Students can choose to ask questions or just listen along as we work through the course. The first webinar will be held:
