Pixel Oil Pastel

The subject of my creation is a portrait with a colorful background. I made this work by picking a picture out of a magazine and calculated the measurements of it and put the length and width of the picture on to a piece of paper. I then graphed the piece of paper, and the picture. After this, I started in the upper left hand corner, and combined all of the colors within on square, and mixed it together with pastels and a tortillan. To draw the graph, I used a HB pencil, and a ruler. I chose to create this specific artwork because I really liked all of the colors that it had, and I thought it was really pretty. Elements and principles I used were, color, and line to form the squares within the artwork. Principles I used were, contrast, by contrasting the darks and lights within the picture.

Composition rules and techniques I used were, grouping, I used this by combining all of the colors in the square (group) to make one single color. Another composition rule and technique that I used were, informal balance, I used this by making the person in the picture a little diagonal as it was in the picture, but it still looks nice. One way my project revolved was, instead of working on row by row, I thought that if I worked on sections with prettier colors, I thought that it might make the time go by faster, which I did, and then I worked on the uglier colored parts of the picture.

The meaning behind this artwork I think is, as you can see, the person in the photograph is wearing a gross pea green color, with pink, and the person next to (which I cut out most of) is wearing an army green color shirt. But the colors in the background are vibrant and colorful. I think this might mean, if the main focus of your life, like school, or friends, or family is boring, sad, or angry, you can look outside of the mainfocuse of your life to the more colorful parts, and the more playful, that way you wont feel so sad, bored, or angry. This project related to my life because, sometimes, i'll be in school and all I can think about is how bored I am, but then I think about other things, and how happy i'll be when I get home, and can do what pleases me. One thing that bothers be in this artwork, is that some of the squares are darker and have more pastel in them, than others. If I used my time more wisely, I would of fixed this by adding more pastel to the squares that aren't as dark, and have les pastel in them.
