Scholastics #1

Gracie

10.75" x 8"

In this piece, the first thing you are drawn to is Gracie's eye which is super important because it shows that relationship in my inquiry question with her and the outside world. This happens with everyone everyone has a facade that they might tend to show to society when they might actually act totally different and be a totally different person than anyone might think. These types of scenarios are often featured in teen shows and movies as well as books.

I made this work by first, taking the photo. I then printed it out a gridded the photo with a one inch grid. I transferred the same grid onto a piece of paper so that the grid was the same. I then sketched everything in each square so that it looked exactly like the picture. I added charcoal to it and shading and it didn't end up looking exactly like the picture but it looks pretty close. I think I ended up grabbing the wrong piece of paper because the charcoal and pencil did not transfer smoothly and as you can see, there are little dots from the texture of the paper.

I used shape, line value and contrast in the project as I was working with the grid method to create very specific lines and shapes and I made sure that the values and contrast were correct so that it was a strong piece of artwork and it looked like the photo. This project evolved from a piece of paper to a charcoal drawing. I chose charcoal for this specific piece of work because I don't have any charcoal drawings and I could submit more artwork to the scholastics competition.I could make the eye and lip more stronger in value so that they pop more against the skin if I continued to work on this project.
