Mixed Media Drawing

the subject of my artwork is a drawing of a picture of myself with glitter and stars on my face. This artwork was made with a grid, charcoal, graphite, ink, black colored pencil, and white chalk. First I drew the glitter and stars square by square, then I painted my hair all the way until my hair reached my face with ink, and went over the ink with charcoal to make it all black and one color. Then I shaded my face with charcoal, drew the eyebrow with a sharpie and made the eyelash and eye crease with chalk. I then added detail to the hair with white chalk, and redrew and filled in the stars with black colored pencil because they faded from blending the charcoal on my face. The next day, I added white sparkles and highlighted the stars with white ink. I chose this specific artwork because I thought it looked really cool, and would be fun to draw. Specific elements and principles I used were, contrast because the black stars and my face contrast, and the white details against the black hair. I also used value because the hair is really richly colored black, and part of the face is white.

Composition rule and techniques I used were, the rule of thirds, because the eye, eyebrow and one star are in the 1/3 section, the three stars farthest to the right on my face and my hair, where it meets my g=face is in the 2/3 section and the rest of my hair is in 3/3 section. I also used low key lighting, you can tell because some of my face is dark. When the stars faded from blending the charcoal, I redrew them again using a ruler. And when we were going around the classroom having a focus question and having your peers answer that question, mine was "what can I do to improve?" and I think two people wrote that I should add highlights to the stars, and add white glitter, which I was planning on doing, but I didn't have any white glitter at my house. So I took that into more of a consideration and added white ink to my drawing.

My artwork doesn't really have a meaning but, I guess if I had to make one, it would be that always have hope because even if you are feeling down, everything will be fine in the end you just have to have hope so you can keep moving on. This relates to me because, I really like stars, and whenever I look at the stars they always make me happy, or make me hopeful. Something that bothers me in this artwork is my eye that I drew, it looks like a wrinkly old lady eye, and if i had more time, I would've looked up a video on how to draw an eye, and make it better that way it doesn't look so wrinkly.
