The subject of my creation is an abstract glass humpback whale jumping in the water. This work was made with glass and elmers glue. I first figured out the placement I wanted from the whale, and then I put a tiny dot of elmer's glue on the glass pieces and stuck them on the glass sheet. I chose to create this specific artwork because it reminded me of my elementary school art teacher, and we would do this for a unit but ten times smaller. Also I made a humpback whale a while back out of sculpey and it burned, so i made this to make up for it. Elements and principles I used in my artwork are, line with the lines under the whale to represent the white waves, form with the shape of the whale, balance as the whale was put in the perfect spot that wasn't exactly in the middle but still shows balance.
Composition rules and techniques I used in this artwork was, balance as I mentioned before, framing with the framing of the whale, grouping with the glass colors to represent the whale and the ocean. At first when asking people what they thought this piece of work was, they all guessed wrong, which I guess is a given when the artwork is abstract but it made me like like my artwork wasn't good enough. So because of this i added little white dots on the side to represent splashes of water, which didn't really help anyway, but it ended up turning out a lot better than I expected it to.
The meaning of this artwork is to think of the whales, not many people think about them and as they are endangered it is important to do so. They are extremely incredible animals and super unique. This project relates to my life because I love whales, they are on of my favorite animals and that is why I chose to make a glass whale. One thing I would change about this artwork would be to add a pattern in the background, although I tried many time to do this, I couldn't find the perfect pattern to go with is. Also, on the chin of the whale, there is a little yellow piece that bothers me, I would next time go back and be careful about what colors I use to see if they have any color tints to them like the white had a slight yellow tint to it, and that's why it is yellow now.
