The subject of my art is my friend Aynslie Decker with a fan in her face, so that why you can see her hair is a little crazy. I made this artwork by first graphing out my picture reference and the paper using an hb pencil, then I sketched out her face and hair using an hb pencil. I then "shaded" her face with purple water color. Then I colored in her lips with pink water color, I filled in the eyes with black ink and added highlights with white ink. I then filled in the hair with black charcoal and painted over it with plack ink. To add highlights in the hair, I used white chalk and white ink. I filled in her eyebrows and eyelashes with a thin permanent marker, and lastly for the back ground I took purple oil painted that I had at home and filled in the background. I chose to create this artwork because I love using black charcoal and ink, and white charcoal and ink for hair and pulling the highlights out to make it look realistic. Specific elements and principals I used were, shape when outlining the hair to put highlights in later and I also used balance with more shading in the face on the right, and more highlights on the left side of her head.
Some composition rules and techniques I used in this piece of artwork was, the rule of thirds in the back ground with dark purple on the 3/3 rds. portion, light purple in the 2/3 rds. portion and purple in the1/3 rds. portion. I also used grouping in the background with groupings of different shades of purple as well in her face, and whit and black grouping in her hair. My project evolved because originally I was going to use charcoal for shading all around, but instead I wasn't liking the way it was turning out so I used purple watercolor.
The meaning behind my artwork is, the value of friendship. The bright colors represent the bright colors of friendship and the happiness you see in a friendship. And the person in the artwork is one of my really good friends so the artwork of her as well represents friendship. This relates to my life because the girl in the artwork is one of my best friends and the whole meaning of the artwork is about friendship. The one thing I would change about this artwork would be the eyes in the portrait.
