Color Value Project

The subject of my creation is, Notan art. With waves, the sun, mountains, and the moon and stars. I made this by first cutting out the center piece of paper and cutting out shapes that way I can use them later on. I then painted the centerpiece with light and dark shades. After this I painted the background with different value scales for each color I was given. After I finished this, I put a piece of white paper on the other side of the center piece to cancel out any blemishes you could see through the cut out shapes. After all of the painting was finished and the centerpiece was in the middle of the painting, I took the leftover shapes and placed them like a mirror like image on the other side of the centerpiece. For the sun "legs" and the stars I used an oil sharpie, to add these details. I chose to create this specific artwork because I remember looking at different types of Notan art, and there was one with a sun, mountains trees and houses, and I thought it looked really cool, so I got inspired and twisted it a little to fit my liking and made my art. Elements and principles i used in this artwork was, color, I used a lot of color to create this artwork and make it pop. I also used pattern in this artwork. I used this by making the shades (dark colors) of each color meet each other, and the tints (light colors) meet each other forming a pattern.

Composition rules and techniques I used in this project were, formal balance by making the gray center piece fit perfectly in the center and the other colors outside, this makes it balanced. I also used grouping by grouping the dark shades and light tints together. I revised my work by making sure if there was white spots in the values I would touch them up and add multiple layers for every color and shade.

The meaning behind this artwork is, to not judge a book by it's cover. The first place someone usually look is in the middle or center of something, in this art project the first thing you might see is the gray part of the project like the gray exterior of someone you don't really know them. But once you get to know them they might be really awesome, like the bright colors on the outside of the gray centerpiece. This project relates to my life, because I often judge people too before I meet them I think that most people do, and it's a good warning not to do it, because you may never know what that person might be like. One thing specifically bothers me is the regular orange color has parts of brown in it because I accidentally put the next color there and couldn't cover it all the way up, I also don't like the regular green-blue because It has different amount of layers in different parts of it. If I managed my time more wisely, I would've been able to fix this situation, now knowing this, I might actually put this into an action instead of always thinking about it, and just doing it.
