Injuries
Lifeguards are responsible for providing first aid for any injuries occurring in the pool or on the pool deck. They are trained in first aid and have a kit available on the deck. If they provide care, the lifeguard completes a Dixon incident report and may need information from KidSpirit staff who witnessed the incident. Generally, a staff member present must sign the report - make sure to read the completed report carefully before signing (Dixon is updating this procedure).
Any injury occurring during swim lessons, locker room transitions, or at any point during the program requires a KidSpirit incident report, even if a Dixon report was already completed. This ensures KidSpirit maintains its records. Reports must be submitted to the office by the end of the day.
For minor injuries (such as scrapes or bumps), staff must still complete a KidSpirit incident report and notify the Aquatics Supervisor. For serious injuries, contact the Aquatics Supervisor immediately and ensure the report is completed. Notify the camper’s parent or guardian as soon as possible.
Water Rescues and Serious Incidents
If a water rescue occurs, an incident report must be filed out, and the camper’s parent or guardian notified. Staff must contact the Aquatics Supervisor immediately to report any serious incidents or water rescues.
In summer, contact the Camp Supervisor (Karen or Ashlea) immediately for serious incidents, as the higher participant volume and longer lessons require swift and clear communication.
During the school year, contact the Aquatics Supervisor immediately.
Biohazardous Materials
When biohazardous material is present, staff must notify the lifeguard and Aquatics Supervisor immediately. Staff and swimmers clear the pool area and transition to a dry-land lesson. The lifeguard will coordinate with appropriate personnel to clean and treat the pool. If the incident occurs in the Women’s Building, notify the Building Manager to ensure proper procedures are followed. The Aquatics Supervisor will support the lifeguards as needed.
For biohazards outside the pool, such as on the pool deck or in locker rooms, staff must act based on the severity of the incident:
For minor incidents (such as small urine spills), use gloves and disinfectant from the equipment issue cage (Women’s Building) or KidSpirit office (Langton).
For blood, use the lifeguard’s blood spill disinfectant and seal cleaning materials in a bag for disposal.
For major incidents (feces or vomit), notify the KidSpirit office immediately, block off the area, and call Custodial Services at (541) 737-2157. Inform the Building Manager that custodial services have been contacted. Complete a KidSpirit incident report and notify the camper’s parent or guardian.
