Entering Pool
Summer Procedure
Head instructors meet campers outside of the locker rooms with appropriate dress (staff shirt, Slides, pants, or a towel wrapped around the waist).
Have the campers split into lines for the appropriate locker rooms
Campers and staff need to use indoor voices to be respectful toward others in the building.
All participants need to change quickly and quietly. The faster the campers change, the more pool time they have. Note the amount of time it takes campers to change into their suits to gauge how much time they will need to get out of the pool and change at the end of the activity. (A helpful tip is to make sure that the campers know how much time they have to change. Ex. 5 min. keep the kids updated on how much time has passed. You can also play KidSpirit appropriate music and have the campers change before the song is over.)
Once changed, campers and staff are to pack up their belongings. Everyone should place their belongings in the corner of the shower area to keep them dry. This also prevents getting the changing area wet because no one should need to go back for their belongings.
Instructors will lead campers to their designated areas in the pool once all campers have exited the locker rooms.
Instructors and CC’s will note that all campers are out of the locker rooms by closing the door behind them and the very last camper.
School Year Programming
Guardians are responsible for their children in the locker rooms
Children under 7 may go in their guardian's gender locker room.
Parent Observation: Parents should view lessons from the second-floor deck unless otherwise approved.
General Locker room procedures
All participants and staff MUST take a cleansing shower before entering the pool. This is in accordance to Oregon Health laws.
There should be no horseplay in the locker room, shower area, or pool deck.
A Swim Instructor or Camp Counselor MUST be in the pool prior to campers exiting the locker room.
Participants will sit on the pool deck facing the pool, waiting for further instructions.
Leaving Pool (Summer)
Campers are to rinse off in the showers and then must dry completely off in the shower area prior to going to the changing area. It is helpful to remove swimsuits in the shower area and wring them out before moving into the locker area. The floor of the locker area must stay dry to prevent falls.
Have campers change quickly and quietly. Aim for 8 minutes to change back into dry clothes. Explain to students that excessive changing time after exiting the pool will result in earlier dismissal from the pool and, therefore, less fun activity time.
When entering and exiting the pool, avoid times when a singular staff member is alone with a camper, especially while showering or changing.
Camp Counselors should change at the same time as campers, either in the shower stalls with a curtain or in a bathroom stall. This ensures that they are ready to go to the next activity as soon as their campers are ready. As camp counselors change, Swim Instructors can assist their class with changing. There should be one camp counselor and one or more Swim Instructors in the locker room at all times.
Report transition issues to the office for support.
Ensure campers are safely transitioned and belongings cleaned up before proceeding to the next activity. Avoid situations where a single staff member is alone with a camper during showers or changing.
