Scheduled head instructors will write the ACES day's lesson plan for each group that they are instructing. This should be done and double checked by the Special Events supervisor at least 2 days prior to the ACES day.
Scheduling & managing time:
50 minutes should be filled with activity.
Lesson plans should include things that a participant can finish in a day; but not in only 5 minutes.
Clean-up time should be built into schedules.
Keep track of time throughout the day!
Check out the facility management pages for any space you will be in.
This is not summer camp, and we're not alone on campus!
Keep rooms very clean.
Be aware of your time, as college classes may use the rooms around your time slot!
Be mindful of space both in and between classes. Hallways are shared, so leave room!
Clean-up time means leaving time and asking participants to help clean up... but don't leave too much time! Still, have a short sit-down activity on hand just in case you're left with five extra minutes!
Check out the equipment management pages for any departments you will be working with.
Have your clipboard on you at all times.
Your clipboard has a lot of important information on it about students/participants.
Some of the information you have is confidential. Keep your clipboard with you and DO NOT allow participants to play with it.
Have a first aid kit on you at all times.
If any piece of the kit is used, let a leadership member know as soon as you see them. The kit must be restocked, and a non-emergency form will need to be filled out.
Mental "bag of tricks" to help participants stay on task
Short, interesting activities to do with small bits of extra time
Games or creative activities to encourage quiet indoor transitions (ex: quiet ninjas)
Creative activities to help with transitions outside may include songs or noisemaking, if done in a considerate way that respects passers by.
Non-emergency forms must be filled out for any use of the first aid kit, any incident, or any behavioral issue.
A leadership member or supervisor can help you with this process.
When a non-emergency form is filled out, the parent must be called or talked to at check-out before you leave for the day.
ACES days should be scheduled as "KidSpirit Special Events" in EmpCenter. They are paid at the same rate as other positions.
