This demonstration shows the heating effects of current. As more current is passed through the wire it sags, then glows. This can also be used to talk about how a light bulb works.

Setup:
Place the stands on the demo table. Attach the alligator clips to the stands with the right angle clamps. Make sure none to clamp at the insulated portion. Do not let the metal touch.
Cut a piece of Nichrome wire and suspend it between the alligator clips.
Plug the adapter into the variac.
Turn on the variac and slowly turn up the power. The wire will bend, then glow. Do not turn the power up too high or the wire will break.
Notes:
Be careful to the Nichrome wire doesn't touch any part of the stand system.
Do not touch the wire while on as it will be very hot.
