Polarization by Scattering
This demonstration shows polarization by scattering. Light is projected up through a beaker filled with water mixed with coffee creamer. A polarizer is held in front of the beaker. As the polarizer is rotated, the beaker appears brighter and dimmer showing that the light is now polarized.
* Equipment seen in the video may vary from equipment used in ND Demonstrations. See information and images below for ND equipment and setup.
Setup:
Place the apparatus on the table. Fill the 2000 mL beaker with water.
In a small beaker, mix water and coffee creamer until dissolved. Pour the mixture into the other beaker and stir until combined.
Turn on the lamp and dim the lights in the room.
Hold a polarizer in front of the beaker and rotate it to see the brightness change.
Notes:
This may be done with a simple lamp as well.
